Planning a trip to the DMV, mailing a package or visiting a government office? You may need to wait until Tuesday.

Monday, Oct. 12, is Columbus Day, a federal and West Virginia state holiday that will close many government offices and affect some services across the Kanawha Valley.

The date is also observed as Indigenous Peoples Day, although West Virginia officially recognizes the occasion as Columbus Day.

Here's a look at what's open and closed.

What's closed Monday?

Federal offices and mail service: Most federal government offices will be closed Monday, and the U.S. Postal Service will suspend regular mail delivery and retail operations. Postal services will resume Tuesday, Oct. 13, although some self-service options will remain available during the holiday.

Many banks will also observe the holiday, although customers should check with their individual financial institutions.

State offices: Most West Virginia state government administrative offices will be shuttered for the holiday, including regional offices of the Division of Motor Vehicles. That includes the Kanawha City DMV office in Charleston.

County and municipal offices: The Kanawha County Courthouse will be closed Monday, along with government offices in Charleston, Nitro and Dunbar, according to local government announcements.

The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department and the Charleston Sanitary Board will also observe the holiday.

Public libraries: Three libraries in the county that operate independently of the Kanawha County Public Library system will not open Monday: the South Charleston Public Library, Nitro Public Library and Montgomery Public Library.

Will trash collection be affected?

That depends on where you live.

In Charleston, refuse and recycling collection will continue on the regular schedule Monday, despite the city government holiday, according to the city's announcement.

In Dunbar, trash collection will run one day behind its normal schedule because of the holiday, according to city officials.

Residents of other municipalities should check with their local governments for any changes to collection schedules.

What's open Monday?

Not everything will shut down for the holiday.

Kanawha County public school students are expected to return to class Monday.

The Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority, or KRT, will operate its regular bus schedule, although a previously announced South Charleston route change takes effect Oct. 12.

Branches of the Kanawha County Public Library system are scheduled to maintain their regular hours. The library also has several programs planned Monday, including activities at its Main Library in Charleston and branches in Sissonville and St. Albans.

The library system's Bookmobile is scheduled to visit Kanawha Mall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples Day?

Although they fall on the same date, Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day recognize different aspects of American history.

Columbus Day commemorates Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Caribbean on Oct. 12, 1492. Observed on the second Monday in October, the federal holiday has faced growing criticism over Columbus' treatment of Indigenous people and the consequences of European colonization.

Indigenous Peoples Day instead honors the histories, cultures and contributions of Native Americans while recognizing the lasting effects of colonization. Some states and local governments observe it in place of Columbus Day, while others recognize both.

In West Virginia, state law designates the second Monday in October as Columbus Day. Indigenous Peoples Day is not separately recognized as a state legal holiday.

The federal government and the city of Charleston also officially list the holiday as Columbus Day, although communities, organizations and individuals may choose to observe Indigenous Peoples Day.
